PROBLEM

As lockdowns and social distancing became a norm in 2020, business travel was greatly affected. This included the limiting of attendees for large scale business events such as meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE). That got us wondering how the essential business events would take place in the new normal moving forward.
TASK

As part of a platform project at NUS Industrial Design, our team had to envision how trade shows would take place with social distancing and limited travel opportunities. This was especially tricky for trade shows involving tangible products like food, electronics and fragrances where sensory experiences were crucial purchase decisions. Hence, my team and I sought to design a system for hosting trade shows in the new normal, using the case study of wine fairs.
QUESTIONS TO ANSWER

How can we allow spontaneous sampling of wine while keeping participants safe?
How can the experience of networking be replicated when retailers and participants are not in the same space?
FINAL CONCEPT ILLUSTRATION

In the video below, we propose a new way wine fairs can be held in the new normal. The key concept employed is decentralisation of both retailers and participants to reduce the cost of business travel. The wine sampling experience is made up for with pre event picking and shipping of samples.
